Welcome to the Institute for Christian Practitioners
The Institute for Christian Practitioners (ICP) is an online training provider that offers Continuous Development (CPD) programmes and workshops. The CPD programmes serve to enrich Christian religious practitioners and lead to vocational enhancement, as well as personal and professional development. All programmes are offered online and bear CPD credits awarded by appropriate professional councils, namely the Council for Christian Pastoral and Spiritual Counsellors (CPSC) or Council for General Ministry Practitioners (CGMP).
CPSC and CGMP are specialist councils of the Association of Christian Religious Practitioners (ACRP), a newly registered professional body (registered by SAQA).
The Association of Christian Religious Practitioners provides two kinds of services, namely professional body services and training support services. These two groups of services are closely related: to be a professional assumes that the person was trained for the profession. With this in mind, ACRP’s mission statement (strategic focus) brings training and professionalisation together.
The Council for Pastoral and Spiritual Counsellors (CPSC)
The purpose of the professionalisation of Christian Religious Practitioners is to ensure adherence to national standards of training, ethical practices, continuous professional development and lifelong learning.
The Council for General Ministry Practitioners (CGMP)
This council provides services to ministry leaders in general and specialists in sub-disciplines such as youth ministry. For more information see http://www.acrpafrica.com/general-councils.html
Background to the Institute for Christian Religious Practitioners (ICP)
The ICP developed from the Insitute of Christian Psychology (Germiston Campus of Die Afrikaanse Protestantse Akademie NPC) that offered degree (BA and B Psych) courses and Christian counselling courses. The main focus of these courses was on the Human Sciences and related subjects, such as Psychology, Industrial Psychology, Christian Psychology, Sociology, Education and Christian Counselling.
Christian Psychology is an approach to Psychology that emphasizes a holistic approach to the scientific study of human behaviour. A holistic approach includes the critical studying of human behaviour on an intra-psychological, interpersonal, socio-economic and spiritual level.
The Institute for Christian Practitioners emerged from the academic offerings presented by the Institute of Christian Psychology and the observed needs in training identified to provide vocational training for life-long learning. This focus is the beginning of a new season for the ICP that is full of promise as a change in season is symbolic of development and growth. Solomon states in Ecclesiates 3:1: “To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven; A time to be born, a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up;… ” In this season the ICP aims to contribute to the professionalisation of Christian religious practitioners in South Africa.
We have highly talented and committed teaching and support staff members working together to provide an environment in which practitioners can thrive. Our doors are open to all practitioners as we respect and value diversity. We place a high premium on Christian spirituality and opportunities as well as support for spiritual development and growth are provided.
Christian faith serves as the backbone for all our activities as well as instilling hope, love and service. We strive to serve the communities of South Africa and welcome everybody interested in sharing this ideal.
